Afternoon Demonstrations and Workshops

We host afternoon demonstrations / lectures from well known guest artists which cover a variety of subjects. We also hold workshops which are run by guest artists for those of you who want to get their hands dirty.

Demonstrations / Lectures

These afte rnoon demos are free to current paid-up members of the Association and open to non-members on payment of £5.00 at the door. They are held in the Lecture Theatre, Perth Art Gallery, 78 George Street, Perth PH1 5LB, commencing at 2pm and finishing by 4pm. Teas and coffees are served mid-way through, with nominal charge of £1.00 per cup.

Wheelchair accessible and induction loop operational.

Workshops

FEE PER WORKSHOP:  Member – £20.00   Non-member – £25.00

Workshops are from 10am – 2.30pm, with half an hour for lunch. Please bring your own lunch. Teas, coffees and biscuits are provided and there are good kitchen facilities if needed.

They are held at The Scout Hall, Perth Academy, Oakbank Crescent, Perth. (Just inside the academy carpark main entrance)

Please arrive about 9.45am to get set up.

BOOKINGS: Will be taken on a first come first served basis after distribution of the prospectus. Each workshop is limited to a maximum of 10 attendees.

ALFRED ALLAN

SEASCAPES IN ACRYLIC

Alfred is a well known artist living in Fife. His popular paintings include landscapes, seascapes and harbour scenes, which can be seen in galleries across Scotland. He will be demonstrating the technique he uses to create a seaside/seascape scene in acrylics.

HAVE FUN WITH GOUACHE

An accomplished and experienced artist in watercolour, Allan will share his expertise and demonstrate how to make best use of this vibrant, opaque medium to create wonderful paintings.

KAREN VAN DE GRAAF

PAINTING PORTRAITS

Karen, an experienced portrait performer, will show how she approaches painting a portrait in acrylics. She will use the Zorn palette to achieve a harmoniously colourful head. She is keen to share her experiences on Sky Portrait Artist of the Year 2023 and so this promises to be a fun filled session, full of energy and tips about capturing faces.

TOM BARRON

ALLA PRIMA PAINTING IN OIL

Tom is a landscape and seascape painter, working professionally in oils on canvas since 1998. His aim is to present the subjects in a raw and naturalistic way. Tom uses free brushwork and a loose, impasto technique to provide movement and life to his work. Tom is the Gallery Director and Curator of City Contemporary Art Gallery on Charlotte Street in Perth.

Car Park Entrance

Enter by the School car park at the top of Murray Place. The Scout Hall is on the right, past the  Janitor’s House.  There is disabled parking only, directly outside the hall.  Cars can be driven to the entrance to unload, but must be parked elsewhere. There is plenty of street parking surrounding the school.

ANIMAL PORTRAIT

Barry will demonstrate how to transfer an image onto canvas/ panel and block in. It is not absolutely necessary that it be an animal, it could be a person, the principals will apply to both.

STILL LIFE

This is an observational drawing class where students will learn to draw from life, with the use of charcoal. Nichola will give a demonstration at the start of the workshop.

Allan will explore the unique properties of this magical medium. Described as ‘opaque watercolour’ but it is much more than that, so come along and give it a try.
Samples will be on hand.

LIFE DRAWING WITH CLOTHED MODEL

Drawing the human figure is a very important skill. It helps artists look closely and understand proportions, as well as experiment with techniques. Douglas will show
us how to achieve drawing a believable figure.

TOWNSCAPE WITH PERSPECTIVE

Crowd scenes, groups of people, and figures in general can seem daunting and so are often avoided in paintings. Allan will show how basic perspective can give the right impression of height, width and depth.
